Why it’s so hard to find someone to make small changes to your website.
You just want to make a few changes to your website!
It’s a common frustration.
You have a website that’s 90% great, but you need a few tweaks – maybe to update content, improve conversions, or fix a couple of things that aren’t quite working. So you look for help to make changes to your website or for someone who offers website maintenance services.
Instead, you’re told:
“It’s too messy to fix. We’ll need to build you a brand-new one.”
It can feel like taking your car in for an oil change and being told you need a whole new engine.
You don’t want a full rebuild. You just want your website to work better.
So why is it so hard to find someone to help with small website changes, and why does the conversation so often jump straight to “new site”?
Before we go any further, it’s worth saying this: you don’t always need a new website. Research consistently shows that improving an existing site is often more effective than starting from scratch.
Many sites that are being written off as “too messy” actually just need the right kind of attention, someone willing to look properly, explain what’s really going on, and make sensible improvements without defaulting to a full rebuild.
The “Make Changes to Your Website” myth
If you’ve ever searched for a web developer or web designer to update your website or a web builder to make a few changes, you’ve probably heard a lot of “no”s, often delivered after that inward hiss of breath that mechanics reserve for jobs they’d rather not touch, followed by:
“I’ll only help if we start from scratch.”
That’s frustrating, especially when you know the site doesn’t need ripping out and replacing. But there are reasons this keeps happening.
1. Taking over a website means playing detective
When a developer builds a site from scratch, they know where every wire and pipe is.
When they’re asked to make changes to an existing website, they’re stepping into a mystery.
They have to work out:
- How was this site built?
- Are there hidden issues that could break if one thing changes?
- Has it been patched together over time with digital “duct tape”?
The truth is, many developers prefer a blank canvas. Solving a mystery is harder – and riskier – than starting again, especially if they don’t know what they’re inheriting.
2. Why “five minutes” can take five hours
From the outside, a request often sounds simple:
“I just want to change the colour of this box.”
On a well-built site, that might take five minutes.
On an older or poorly structured site, that same box might be linked to ten other things.
Change it, and suddenly:
- The layout breaks on mobile
- The contact form stops working
- The site looks fine on desktop but not on iPhones
Until someone looks under the bonnet, they genuinely don’t know whether they’re dealing with a quick fix or a bigger problem. That’s why it’s so hard to give a straight answer – or a fixed price – without investigating first.
3. The “cheap fix” problem
Some people will agree to make small changes to your website for a low fee, but often they’re just applying a sticking plaster.
Over time, those quick fixes stack up. The site becomes slower, harder to manage, and more fragile. Eventually, it really does need rebuilding, not because it started that way, but because no one took care of it properly.
That’s the difference between patching a problem and actually fixing it.
A different way to approach website changes
I don’t believe in throwing away a perfectly good website just because it needs some attention.
Instead of a “new site or nothing” approach, I focus on website evolution.
That means:
- A health check first – looking under the hood to understand what’s really going on
- Plain-English advice – what needs fixing now, what can wait, and what’s not worth touching
- Evolution-first thinking – if your site has solid foundations, I’ll work with what you already have to save time and money
Sometimes a rebuild is the right answer, but it shouldn’t be the default.
The bottom line
You shouldn’t be pushed into a £5,000 website rebuild when a targeted set of improvements or changes is all you need.
If you’re trying to make changes to your website, update content, or improve how it performs, you deserve someone who’s willing to do the detective work – and tell you the truth, not just sell you a shiny new build.
